Making dinner, entertaining or relaxing without the TV are all accompanied by a soundtrack. The music starts by yelling into the air, “Hey Siri, play 80s music.” The first songs are emblematic of the requested music, but soon Apple Music will wander. The wandering songs are still in the requested parameter (80’s music, in my example), they tend to get less popular songs within the genre, something like B-sides or obscure bands with sonically adjacent songs. Soon enough, the musical path takes one of two paths: obscure songs that stay in the genre or extended versions of popular songs.</p> <p>This weekend, the HomePod played a version of “Purple Rain” that felt like it was 20 minutes long. Long enough to have noticed when the song started, do kitchen tasks for several minutes and realize that the same song was playing, followed by several more minutes of work and a further realization “damn, is this still Purple Rain?”</p> <p>Here is my hypothesis—Apple knows that HomePod owners use the device to have music playing in the background for <em>hours</em>. Song royalties add up after hours of play, particularly based on which catalogue or library they come from. Apple Music engineers steer the algorithm to less costly songs, or when playing popular songs, the algorithm selects the longest version possible. Longer songs for a single royalty payment cost less in totality than a several shorter popular songs.</p> <p>I find it interesting that Apple Music users are being steered to a compromise position, in which we get mostly the music we want while also trying to keep costs down. It is seamless, almost undetectable, and insidious.</p> </section> </section> </article> <a href="https://jeredb.com/2023/04/11/apple-musics-algorithmic.html" class="u-url"> <aside class="dates"> <time datetime="2023-04-11 09:00:00 -0400" class="dt-published">9:00 AM, Apr 11 → </time> </aside> </a> </li> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> <li> <article> <section class="post-body"> <header> <h2>Deeper thought 💭 on <a href="https://jeredb.com/2022/12/24/twas-the-night.html">Twas the night before Christmas, i guess →</a></h2> </header> <section class="post-body"> <p>Happy holidays!</p> <audio controls="controls" src="https://micro.blog/pages/downloads/538/1763248/696037.mp3" preload="metadata"> </audio></section> </section> </article> <a href="https://jeredb.com/2022/12/24/twas-the-night.html" class="u-url"> <aside class="dates"> <time datetime="2022-12-24 23:01:39 -0400" class="dt-published">11:01 PM, Dec 24 → </time> </aside> </a> </li> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> <li> <aside class="idea"> <h3>💭 brief thought…</h3> <p>The painting setup has been packed up in preparation of a holiday party, but the upgrade to an easel has been a game changer!</p> <p>more painting coming soon.</p> <img src="https://jeredb.studio/uploads/2022/58d087c6f7.jpg" width="450" height="600" alt=""> <a href="https://jeredb.com/2022/12/17/the-painting-setup.html" class="u-url"> <aside class="dates"> <time datetime="2022-12-17 13:33:48 -0400" class="dt-published">1:33 PM, Dec 17 → </time> </aside> </a> </aside> </li> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> <li> <aside class="idea"> <h3>💭 brief thought…</h3> <p>This morning i saw the photo that <a href="https://micro.blog/hollyhoneychurch">@hollyhoneychurch</a> <a href="https://blog.hollyhoneychurch.com/2022/12/10/162157.html">posted</a> and here is my attempt to paint it.</p> <p>This was my first attempt with a sketch, and then on to the larger canvas. I have not deleted my accounts on Twitter, but I haven’t logged in in years. I am worried that my username would eventually get recycled and that someone would be “me” online. The same with Instagram.</p> <p>I have been awful at using my blog, my microblog, and social media as a whole. I think partly that is due to my want to feed into the <em>air-quote</em> content <em>air-quote</em> creation game. I didn’t want to create things for other people’s platforms. I’ve gone back and forth over years, wanting to share and post, and almost immediately running out of steam, losing interest, or hearing about some privacy thing that immediately makes me regret any commitment. But this is my blog. I can share what I want because it is hosted someplace but under my name.</p> <p>So, this is Jeredb.com. It is my blog.</p> <p>Like it says as the “tagline”, I have thoughts. I guess I am sharing them now.</p> <p>It is hosted on <a href="https://micro.blog">Micro.blog</a>, where it has been for a few years. I like the simplicity, and it has been, all things considered, very stable. I added an online status checker (<a href="https://sitestatus.jeredb.com">sitestatus.jeredb.com</a>), and if you see a recent downtime, that was because I boogered a DNS thing up. Part of the reason why I like Micro.blog, there is so much less for me to fiddle with. I am trying to turn this blog into something, so I am trying to make it more comfortable, but not overly fiddly. I will go hard on fiddling, but not writing. There are some minor changes to the theme (Marfa), but it is pretty standard. I am going to try to keep it that way.</p> <p>I have added a status widget (up there 👆🏻). The status widget is powered by <a href="https://omg.lol">omg.lol</a>. This is my equivalent of a “tweet”, “toot”, or other fleeting post. These are ephemeral, little insights, and while they are captured, they are not part of the “blog.” As the omg.lol team adds more features to their quirky services, I may add more features added to this blog, but who knows. My first future thought is that I may use the omg.lol weblog feature to create the Micro.blog <strong>/now</strong> page equivalent. Finally, I clicked a button to make this blog Mastodon compatible. I’m not really sure what that means right now.</p> <p>I also have set up a separate blog to catalog my painting. You can find it at <a href="https://jeredb.studio">jeredb.studio</a>. It is going to be solely focused on my painting. It has most of my paintings to date, and I may write about my creative process and inspiration. The painting blog will be more pictures than words, but as the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.</p> <p>I guess you can say it is good to be back.</p> </section> </section> </article> <a href="https://jeredb.com/2022/12/03/updates.html" class="u-url"> <aside class="dates"> <time datetime="2022-12-03 22:50:36 -0400" class="dt-published">10:50 PM, Dec 3 → </time> </aside> </a> </li> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> <li> <aside class="idea"> <h3>💭 brief thought…</h3> <p><a href="https://www.samdavies.me/2022/11/24/i-dont-care.html">First noted by @mrbeefy</a>, the new Worlde editor ruins the puzzle - <a href="https://slate.com/technology/2022/11/wordle-editor-ruining-wordle.html">The New Wordle Editor Is Ruining Wordle</a></p> <a href="https://jeredb.com/2022/11/30/first-noted-by.html" class="u-url"> <aside class="dates"> <time datetime="2022-11-30 08:30:11 -0400" class="dt-published">8:30 AM, Nov 30 → </time> </aside> </a> </aside> </li> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> <li> <aside class="idea"> <h3>💭 brief thought…</h3> <p>Men watching football, oil on canvas paper, 2022.</p> <p>A very quick life study after driving all day.</p> <img src="https://cdn.uploads.micro.blog/538/2022/d6de9c4b50.jpg" width="599" height="600" alt="Men watching football, oil on canvas paper, 2022"> <a href="https://jeredb.com/2022/11/27/men-watching-football.html" class="u-url"> <aside class="dates"> <time datetime="2022-11-27 21:18:01 -0400" class="dt-published">9:18 PM, Nov 27 → </time> </aside> </a> </aside> </li> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> <li> <aside class="idea"> <h3>💭 brief thought…</h3> <p>Alexi Lalas–most curmudgeonly US soccer commentator?</p> <a href="https://jeredb.com/2022/11/25/alexi-lalasmost-curmudgeonly.html" class="u-url"> <aside class="dates"> <time datetime="2022-11-25 17:19:30 -0400" class="dt-published">5:19 PM, Nov 25 → </time> </aside> </a> </aside> </li> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> </ul> <span class="separator"><span class="divider"></span></span> <nav class="pagination" role="navigation"> <span class="page-number">Page 1 of 58</span> <a class="older-posts" href="/page/2/">Older Posts →</a> </nav> </section> <footer id="footer"> <section id="wrapper"> <ul> <li><a href="/feed.xml">RSS</a></li> <li><a href="/feed.json">JSON Feed</a></li> <li><a href="https://micro.blog/jeredb" rel="me">Micro.blog</a></li> <li><a href="https://proven.lol/d07d5c">Proof of ownership</a></li> <li><a href="https://sitestatus.jeredb.com">Site Status</a></li> </ul> <form method="get" id="search" action="https://duckduckgo.com/"> <input type="hidden" name="sites" value="https://jeredb.com/"> <input type="hidden" name="k8" value="#444444"> <input type="hidden" name="k9" value="#ee4792"> <input type="hidden" name="kt" value="h"> <input class="field" type="text" name="q" maxlength="255" placeholder="To search, type and hit Enter…"> <input type="submit" value="Search" style="display: none;"> </form> </section> <a href="https://www.thetrevorproject.org/" target="_blank" id="lgbtq" style="position: fixed; left: 10px; bottom: 10px; height: 20px; width: 20px; box-shadow: rgba(1, 47, 154, 0.13) 0px 0px 20px 0px; z-index: 1000; border-radius: 2px; --noir-inline-box-shadow: rgba(1, 38, 123, 0.13) 0px 0px 20px 0px;" data-noir-inline-box-shadow=""> <div style="height: 4px; background-color: rgb(214 2 112); border-radius: 2px 2px 0px 0px; --noir-inline-background-color: #b60103;" data-noir-inline-background-color=""> </div> <div style="height: 3px; background-color: rgb(214 2 112); --noir-inline-background-color: #cc7000;" data-noir-inline-background-color=""> </div> <div style="height: 3px; background-color: rgb(155 79 150); --noir-inline-background-color: #ccbe00;" data-noir-inline-background-color=""> </div> <div style="height: 3px; background-color: rgb(155 79 150); --noir-inline-background-color: #00661e;" data-noir-inline-background-color=""> </div> <div style="height: 3px; background-color: rgb(0 56 168); --noir-inline-background-color: #003ecc;" data-noir-inline-background-color=""> </div> <div style="height: 4px; background-color: rgb(0 56 168); border-radius: 0px 0px 2px 2px; --noir-inline-background-color: #5e066c;" data-noir-inline-background-color=""> </div> </a> </footer> </body></html>
